European Space Agency (ESA) - CROPSIM – An improved crop management decision tool based on data assimilation of remote sensing derived soil moisture

The LuxLaunch demonstration study “CROPSIM – An improved crop management decision tool based on data assimilation of remote sensing derived soil moisture” undertook crop model simulations for a test site in Luxembourg for the 2010 period. The results have been evaluated on the basis of regression with known crop yield data. The improvement of crop yield estimates by assimilation of remote sensing data has been successfully demonstrated using soil moisture retrievals from the ASCAT data set. 

The final outcome of this study was the implementation of a prototype of a Web-based decision support tool based on a GeoServer that can provide customers, such as machinery rings, with reliable forecasts of expected crop yield, health state, and the optimal time of harvest to assist them in optimizing in the usage of their resources and infrastructure.
